2000 Rupee Notes Update: The Reserve Bank of India ( RBI ) announced on the first day of the new year that 98.12 percent of the Rs 2000 notes withdrawn from circulation have returned to the banking system. RBI revealed that as of 31 December 2024, the public still has Rs 6,691 crore worth of Rs 2000 notes left, which is much less than the total value of Rs 3.56 lakh crore in circulation at the time of demonetisation on 19 May 2023.

2000 Rupee Notes Update: You can still deposit the notes in your bank accounts

According to news agency PTI, RBI said in a statement that thus 98.12 percent of the Rs 2000 notes in circulation till May 19, 2023 have been returned. The facility of exchanging or depositing Rs 2000 notes is available in all banks. However, this option is still open in 19 issue offices of RBI, where individuals and institutions can deposit notes in their bank accounts.

2000 Rupee Notes Update: Additional provisions for depositing notes

RBI offices continue to accept Rs 2000 notes for deposit from October 9, 2023, with additional provisions allowing the public to send the notes through India Post to any issuing office of the RBI for deposit in their accounts. Despite being withdrawn from circulation, Rs 2000 notes continue to be legal tender.

The 19 RBI offices accepting notes are located at Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Belapur, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Patna and Thiruvananthapuram.

These Rs 2000 banknotes were issued for the first time in November 2016 after the demonetization of Rs 1000 and Rs 500 notes.
