
Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala government has announced ₹10 lakh financial assistance for the educational expenses of children who lost their parents in the Meppadi landslide that devastated Wayanad in July 2024.
According to a statement from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), this aid will be provided to:
- 7 children who lost both parents
- 14 children who lost one parent
The decision was finalized during a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Wednesday.
Financial Aid to be Held Until Children Turn 18
The financial assistance will be provided from the Chief Minister’s Distress Relief Fund (CMDRF). However, the funds cannot be withdrawn until the children reach 18 years old. Until then, the Wayanad District Collector will:
Deposit the amount in the district administration's account
Pay monthly interest to the guardians of the affected children
This support is in addition to the financial aid previously granted by the Women and Child Development Department.
Rehabilitation Plan for Landslide Survivors
The Kerala government has also approved compensation for lands acquired to rehabilitate survivors of the Meppadi landslide disaster in Mundakkai and Chooralmala, Wayanad.
- 64.4075 hectares of land in Elston Estate, Vythiri taluk, Kalpetta will be acquired to construct a new township for displaced families.
- A compensation of ₹26.56 crore from CMDRF will be provided to the estate management for the acquired land.
New Posts Sanctioned for Wayanad Township Project
To ensure smooth implementation of the Wayanad Township Project, the government has approved the creation of new posts. The special officer of the project has been authorized to appoint staff as required.
This initiative aims to support the education of orphaned children, provide permanent housing for landslide survivors, and rebuild communities affected by the disaster.
