India’s determination to become the host of the 2036 Olympics is strong and with the government determined to make the deep commitment necessary so that the competition could be held there for the very first time, it will also be a first for India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi while attending the 141st IOC in Mumbai in October mentioned such intentions of India. Last Year the IOA took their first official step with a ‘letter of intent’ to the IOC seeking permission to bring the Olympic games to India.
While India did not confirm which city is taking the lead, Indian Express reports that Ahmedabad is likely to be put forward. However, the Government has said that for the Indian delegation, the need to make these Olympic games an event for the entire country has been discussed which means that some of the sports will be held in other states- post Ahmedabad.
This would imply that Mumbai might host Cricket, Pune might hold Kayaking, Bhopal can have Canoeing and Futsal and Bhubaneswar would host hockey.
This is still a work in progress. None of us can be certain how the end outcome will appear. We will formulate a model and submit it to the International Olympic Committee (IOC). From these discussions, action will be taken. We want to globalize the sports and take it to every nook and cranny of India,” an official was quoted by Indian Express saying.
Chandigarh and Ahmedabad are expecting sports infrastructure worth rupees 6000 crore, with Ahmedabad looking to launch a fierce Olympic bidding campaign.
Naranpura Sports Complex is set to be the first of these projects, estimated to open by March. The Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel (SVP) Sports Enclave located around the Narendra Modi stadium alongside Karai Sports Hub is set to become the main sports location for the 2036 Olympics.
The report also adds that India are already included among the countries that will host various sports activities, including the Youth Olympic in 2030.
India is vying to be the hometown of over a dozen mega international events approximately every four years. Other countries, including Qatar and Saudi Arabia, are also expected to compete.
India has hosted a handful of multi sports events throughout its history, such as, the Asian Games of 1951 and 1982, youth Commonwealth Games in 2008, and Commonwealth Games that took place in 2010.
