In UP, 513 government-recognized madrasas have surrendered their recognition. After this, the UP Madrasa Board is trying to find out why these madrasas want to cancel their recognition by issuing notices to all these madrasas. Are these madrasas withdrawing their recognition due to the strictness of the Yogi government regarding madrasas?
The government has shown strictness.
In fact, after the formation of the Yogi government in UP in 2017, a madrasa portal was created so that fake madrasas could not operate in the state. The result of the portal was that a large number of fake madrasas were closed. Before 2017, there were more than 22000 recognized madrasas in UP which reduced to 16500 after the portal was created.
Web cameras were installed in madrasas to prevent students from cheating. A survey of unrecognized madrasas was conducted in UP in which questions were raised about the donations received by madrasas. The government also ordered an SIT probe into the donations received by madrasas. The SIT has to find out where these madrasas are getting the money from, where are the funds coming from to pay teachers, spend on children in hostels, build madrasa buildings, and what is being taught in madrasas.
So that is why the application for cancellation of recognition was given?
People from the madrasa say that some madrasas, troubled by the government's repeated orders of investigation, have applied to cancel their recognition. Some say that before 2017, the central and state governments used to pay the salary of three teachers for modern education, which has now stopped, making it difficult to run the madrasas.
There are three types of madrasas running in the state
- Those who are registered in the Madrasa portal. There are 16513 such madrasas. About 18 lakh children study in them. All these are recognized madrasas.
- Out of the 16513 madrasas registered in the madrasa portal, 558 are government aided madrasas. In these, the government pays the salaries of teachers and staff, NCERT books, and mid-day meals to the students.
- There are also unrecognized madrasas running in UP that are not on the madrasa portal. The government has surveyed such madrasas.
