Are you aware that your facial appearance has something to say about the liver disease you are suffering from? Dark patches, and red inflamed cheeks are some of the signs that indicate your liver may not be functioning normally. Dr Shashank Rajesh Padhan, Clinical Director of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Marengo Asia Hospitals Gurugram elaborates on why changes in facial features can be associated with liver disease and the significance of such changes.
1. Dark Circles: A Sign and Symptom of A Liver That Is In Overdrive
“When the body’s liver is unhealthy and does not work well, dark circles may appear under the eyes even if there are no sleeping patterns, or treatment programs addressed to them. If they persist even after sufficient hours of sleep, then it is time to examine your liver “. Poor liver health interferes with detoxifying processes through the organ.
2. Structural Abnormalities in the Face:
Signs of Hormonal Changes Structural abnormalities in the face, such as unusual redness of cheeks may also be attributed to increased blood flow, Dr. Padhan notes, “There may be raised estrogen levels which could be due to poor liver function and this is quite often found in patients with alcoholic fatty liver disease.”
3. Inflammatory Conditions in the Face:
Dry Skin with Pruritis Has dry or itchy patches been noticed on the face as well? “Accumulation of bile salts under the skin or lack of secretion of key metabolites due to liver dysfunction,” says Dr Padhan. These patches are not only cosmetic in nature—a sign that the liver may need repairs. 4. Yellow Skin Changes: Jaundice – A Liver Red Flag A yellowish discoloration of eyes and skin is the most visible sign of liver damage. Dr Padhan says this results from the colonization of bilirubin, a by-product of liver activity. Conditions associated with jaundice include dry fatty bilious syndromes or other liver diseases.
5. Facial swelling: Water Retention
Facial swelling is yet another indicator of severe impairment of the liver. “Fingers get enlarged because the liver fails to maintain osmolar equilibrium and this leads to fluid retention with swelling which is often seen on
the face,” says Dr Padhan. This is a disease that is more common in the later stages of liver failure.
6. Acne: Not Just a Skin Deep Issue
Breakouts, especially on the jaw and cheek areas may actually be related to your liver and not the products you use. “Toxicity accumulation along with enzyme deficiency in the liver can disrupt hormonal equilibrium resulting in acne,” says Dr Padhan.
7. Pale skin: A Dreadful Please Take Note
Pale or a dull complexion is also an indicative sign of fatty liver condition. “Detoxification and metabolism are two important functions of the liver and any impairment of these will result in the skin losing its normal glow,” observes Dr Padhan.
When to Go for Assistance
Facial changes like these, according to Dr Padhan, are frequently occurred with other symptoms like pain in the abdomen, tiredness, weakness, or other complex diseases. “When you notice these signs, it is best to talk to a doctor as soon as you can so you can prevent developing complications, the damage can be reversed if caught in the early stages and lifestyle changes like diet as well as exercises can help,” he advises.
Your face does not only show your feelings but also mirrors your heart’s condition. Thus, take heed of those warning signs and protect your liver so as not to incur any complication over time.
