Anna University Student Sexual Assault: Madras High Court has taken suo motu cognizance of the Anna University student sexual assault case. A division bench of Justice SM Subramaniam and Justice V Lakshminarayanan initiated the suo motu petition after a request by a lawyer R Varalakshmi. Let us tell you that the atmosphere in the state is heated on this matter and protests are taking place daily. Not only students but also political parties are targeting the DMK government.

Learn about the case in detail

This case is similar to the Nirbhaya incident of Delhi which shook the whole country. A student studying in Anna University in Chennai was raped by a person who had set up a biryani stall in the same campus. This incident is said to have happened on 23 December at 8 pm. Surprisingly, the place where the rape incident took place was inside the university campus itself. The police identified the accused as Gyanshekaran and arrested him. But the students are angry over the issue of security arrangements in the campus.

According to reports, the victim had gone to meet her friend near the old building of the campus when the accused Gyanshekaran made a video of both of them and later threatened the boy and chased him away from there. After this, he raped the girl and took her phone number, and threatened her that she will have to come wherever he calls her. The girl gathered courage and complained on the 100 number after which the accused was arrested.

BJP launched a campaign

The Bharatiya Janata Party and the AIADMK are quite vocal about this and have made it a big issue. BJP state chief K. Annamalai on Friday flogged himself outside his residence in Coimbatore to protest against the DMK government. K Annamalai accused the DMK government of failing to protect the female students of Anna University in Chennai. Earlier, he had said that he would flog himself six times at 10 am on Friday to draw the attention of the state government to the incident of sexual harassment of female students.

He accused the DMK government and the police of leaking the victim's personal information and called it a shameful act. He also said that this shows the incompetence of the administration. He had announced on Thursday that he would not wear shoes until the DMK is out of power.
