Earlier, when he arrived at the Chennai International Airport, the local authorities brought him out. Meanwhile, fans took his pictures but he went to his home without talking to the media persons. He surprised everyone by announcing his retirement from international cricket after the rain-affected third Test match against Australia in Brisbane was drawn on Wednesday.

However, Ashwin will continue to play club cricket including the Indian Premier League (IPL). He will represent Chennai Super Kings in the next season of IPL. He is second in the list of highest wicket-taking bowlers in Test cricket for India after Anil Kumble. He took 537 wickets in 106 matches. Kumble has taken 619 wickets in Test cricket.
Ashwin played 116 ODIs for India, in which he took 156 wickets, while in 65 T20 Internationals he took 72 wickets. Ashwin started his career in international cricket in the ODI format in 2010. A year later, he made his Test debut.
