The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to abolish the 'Impact Player' rule for the upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy. The 'Impact Player' provision was implemented in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy a few years ago. After this, it was implemented in the Indian Premier League. The BCCI told the state associations on Monday, "Please note that the BCCI has decided to abolish the provision of 'Impact Player' for the current season.'
BCCI's decision to eliminate 'impact player' from the top domestic T20 tournament comes after it decided to retain this rule in IPL till 2027. This rule has led to many scores of more than 250 runs in the last season of IPL. Many current and former players, including Indian captain Rohit Sharma, have criticized this rule.
Rohit had said in a podcast that this would affect the development of all-rounders. Saurashtra head coach Neeraj Odedara welcomed the BCCI's decision. He said, "This is a good change. It is not a part of the major ICC tournaments. In such a situation, it will be good for those cricketers who want to play for India after the domestic season.
