New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has formally requested Lieutenant Governor (LG) VK Saxena to reverse the merger of four government properties with 6, Flagstaff Road, commonly referred to as "Sheesh Mahal", the former official residence of AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal. The bungalow was at the center of BJP’s corruption allegations against him.
BJP Alleges Illegal Expansion of Kejriwal’s Bungalow
Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva alleged that the bungalow was illegally expanded by annexing neighboring government properties.
"I urgently request your intervention to restore these properties to their original independent status and return 6, Flagstaff Road to its previous area of less than 10,000 square meters," Sachdeva wrote in a letter to the LG.
He also stated that the new BJP-led government would decide on the future use of the bungalow but made it clear:
"The next Chief Minister of Delhi will not reside in it."
BJP’s Long-Standing Allegations Against Kejriwal
Kejriwal resided in the bungalow from 2015 until October 2024, when he vacated it following his resignation amid corruption allegations. Throughout the Delhi Assembly election campaign, the BJP accused him of misusing public funds to lavishly renovate the residence, claiming it was an extravagant transformation with opulent interiors and high-end fixtures.
BJP leader Gupta further claimed that Kejriwal had illegally annexed government properties to create what he called an “ultra-luxurious Sheesh Mahal.”
“What was meant to be a standard official residence has been transformed into a lavish complex spanning more than 50,000 square meters,” he alleged.
Properties Allegedly Merged with 6, Flagstaff Road
According to Sachdeva, the merged properties included:
- Eight Type-V flats at 45 and 47 Rajpur Road
- Two government bungalows (8-A and 8-B Flagstaff Road)
These properties were reportedly combined with 6, Flagstaff Road, significantly increasing the bungalow’s overall size.
Call for Investigation and Reversal of Merger
BJP MLA from Rohini, who previously served as Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the dissolved 7th Delhi Assembly, reaffirmed that the BJP’s Chief Minister will not reside in the bungalow, citing ongoing investigations.
Meanwhile, Gupta urged the LG to expedite the inquiry into the alleged violations, adding that the land from the demerged properties would be repurposed for official uses, such as constructing government quarters.
