Baba Siddiqui Murder Case : Praveen Lonkar, the third accused in the murder of Baba Siddiqui, a veteran NCP leader of the Ajit Pawar faction, was presented in court today (Monday). Mumbai's Esplanade Court has sent him to police custody till October 21. Praveen Lonkar was arrested by Mumbai Police from Pune. It is alleged that he, along with his brother Shubham Lonkar, had assigned this task to two of the three alleged shooters.
So far, three people have been arrested in the case. According to the Mumbai Police Crisis Branch, Praveen and Shubham had assigned the task of killing Baba Siddiqui to two alleged shooters, one of whom is a resident of Uttar Pradesh and the other is named Shivkumar Gautam. Gautam is absconding, while the police have arrested another alleged shooter, also a resident of Uttar Pradesh, identified as Gurmel Baljit Singh (23).
The murder network is being searched outside Maharashtra as well.
Maharashtra police have formed a 15-member police team to investigate the murder. Officials said that this team has gone out of Maharashtra and an investigation is being done to find out who provided logistical support to the shooters. Baba Siddiqui (66) was shot by three people outside the office of his MLA son Zeeshan Siddiqui in Kher Nagar in Bandra area of Mumbai on Saturday night, after which he was taken to Lilavati Hospital, where he was declared dead by doctors.
Lawrence Bishnoi gang took responsibility for the murder
The Mumbai Police is verifying a social media post in which an alleged member of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang claimed responsibility for Siddiqui's murder. According to officials, the crime branch is also investigating various angles, including a possible contract killing, business or political rivalry, or threats over a slum rehabilitation project.
