Bibek Debroy Death: Economist and Chief of the Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Council Bibek Debroy died on November 1 at the age of 69. News agency ANI gave information on social media. AIIMS Delhi said that Bibek Debroy died at 7 am today due to intestinal obstruction. Prime Minister Modi expressed his condolences and described Mr. Debroy as "a great scholar". Debroy was also a member of the NITI Aayog and has been a professor at the Center for Policy Research since 2007. He was an alumnus of Presidency College Calcutta, Delhi School of Economics, and Trinity College, Cambridge. Debroy had advocated a new estimate of poverty. He had said that the estimate provided by the Tendulkar Committee is more than a decade old.
Mr Debroy, a Padma Shri awardee, had earlier served as Chancellor of the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics (GIPE) in Pune. PM Modi offered his condolences and described Mr. Debroy as "a great scholar". PM Modi posted on social media that Dr. Bibek Debroy Ji was a great scholar, well-versed in economics, history, culture, politics, spirituality, and other diverse fields. Through his works, he left an indelible mark on India's intellectual landscape. Beyond his contributions to public policy, he loved working on our ancient texts and disseminating them to the youth.
Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan described the economist as an "outstanding academician". Deeply saddened by the demise of Dr Bibek Debroy. He was a distinguished economist, a prolific writer as well as a fine academician.
