Coal Production: India's total coal production increased by 7.2 percent year-on-year to 90.62 million tonnes (MT) in November, as against 84.52 MT in the same period last year. This information was given by the Ministry of Coal. A statement issued by the ministry said that coal production by captive and other entities increased by 37.69 percent year-on-year to 17.13 MT in November 2024 from 12.44 MT in the same period last year. From the beginning of FY 2024-25 to November 2024, coal production has been 628.03 MT, as against 591.32 MT in the same period last year. It has increased by 6.21 percent year-on-year.
Coal dispatch (coal sent to power plants) in November 2024 has shown a steady improvement, rising from 82.07 MT in November 2023 to 85.22 MT, registering a growth of 3.85 percent. Dispatches from captives and other entities also witnessed a sharp increase, rising from 13.19 MT in November 2023 to 16.58 MT in November 2024, registering a YoY growth of 25.73 ppercent
The statement further said that from the beginning of FY 2024-25 till November 2024, coal dispatch increased to 657.75 MT as against 623.78 MT during the same period of the previous fiscal, registering a growth of 5.45 pepercent
The ministry successfully auctioned 9 mines this week as part of the 10th round of commercial coal mine auctions. The ministry said these mines are expected to generate annual revenue of about Rs 1,446 crore (excluding partially explored mines). It is also likely to attract capital investment of about Rs 2,115 crore and generate 19,063 employment opportunities.
The nine mines have a combined geological reserve of about 3,998.73 million tonnes. According to the official statement, the cumulative peak rated capacity (PRC) of these mines, excluding partially explored coal mines, is 14.10 MTPA. Of these, three coal mines are in Jharkhand, while Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and Madhya Pradesh have two mines each.
The Ministry of Coal had launched the 10th round of coal mine auction for commercial mining on June 21, 2024. A total of nine coal mines were successfully auctioned in the advance auctions, which include three fully explored and six partially explored coal mines.
