The Competition Commission of India (CCI) on Monday imposed a fine of Rs 213.14 crore on social media company Meta for adopting unfair business practices about WhatsApp's privacy policy update in 2021.
Order to stop anti-competitive behaviour
In addition, the CCI has directed Meta to cease from anti-competitive behavior. The competition regulator on Monday imposed a fine of Rs 213.14 crore on Meta for abusing its dominant position, an order said.
Why was the fine imposed?
Passing the order against abuse of dominance, the CCI said that the fine relates to how WhatsApp's 2021 privacy policy was implemented, and how user data was collected and shared with other companies of Meta.
The European Union has also imposed a fine.
Earlier, the European Union's privacy regulator on Friday fined Meta more than $100 million for security lapses related to Facebook users' passwords. The Irish Data Protection Commission said in its order that it has imposed a fine of 91 million euros, or $101.6 million, on the US company Meta after investigating the matter.
