Justice Shekhar Yadav remarks: The issue of Allahabad High Court Justice Shekhar Kumar Yadav attending the program of Vishwa Hindu Parishad is gaining momentum. Lawyer and convener of the NGO 'Campaign for Judicial Accountability and Reforms' Prashant Bhushan on Tuesday wrote a letter to the Chief Justice of India ( CJI ) Sanjeev Khanna and appealed for a departmental inquiry into the conduct of Justice Shekhar Kumar Yadav of Allahabad High Court.

Comments at a Vishva Hindu Parishad event

Bhushan has made this appeal in the wake of the remarks made by Justice Yadav at a program of Vishwa Hindu Parishad. The NGO alleges that these remarks are a violation of judicial ethics and constitutional principles of impartiality and secularism. Justice Shekhar Yadav of Allahabad High Court had said that the main objective of the Uniform Civil Code ( UCC ) is to promote social harmony, gender equality, and secularism by eliminating unequal legal systems based on different religions and communities.

What did Justice Yadav say

According to a release issued by the VHP, Justice Shekhar Yadav, while addressing the provincial convention of the VHP's legal cell and High Court unit in the library hall of Allahabad High Court on Sunday, said that the Uniform Civil Code based on the principles of equality, justice,e, and secularism has been a matter of debate in India for a long time. A Uniform Civil Code refers to a common law that applies to all religious communities in personal matters such as marriage, inheritance, divorce, adoption, etc.

Bhushan raised the issue

In a letter to the CJI, Bhushan said that Justice Yadav gave a speech supporting the UCC and made controversial remarks targeting the Muslim community. The letter said that Justice Yadav's participation in the VHP event and his comments violated the oath of maintaining neutrality of the Constitution.
