The Delhi Capitals are gearing up for their 18th season in the IPL, with hopes of clinching their first-ever title in 2025. However, just days before their opening match on March 24 against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), the team has suffered a massive setback—Harry Brook has been handed a two-year ban by the BCCI.
Why Has Harry Brook Been Banned from IPL?
According to a report by The Indian Express, Brook withdrew at the last minute from IPL 2025 due to his commitments with the England national team. However, under the new BCCI policy, any player who opts out after being picked in the auction will be banned from entering the IPL auction for the next two years.
An official communication regarding Brook’s ban has been sent to both the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and the player himself.
A BCCI source confirmed the decision, stating:
“An official communication has been sent to ECB and Brook about BCCI banning him for two years as per its policy, which was informed to each player before they registered their name for the IPL auction last year. It’s a policy set by the board, and each player has to oblige to it.”
Why Did Harry Brook Pull Out of IPL 2025?
In an official statement, Harry Brook apologized to Delhi Capitals and their supporters for his withdrawal from IPL 2025. He explained that he wanted to fully commit to England's upcoming series, which includes:
- Three ODIs against West Indies
- A crucial five-match Test series against India
Brook described the decision as "very difficult", emphasizing his commitment to representing England at the highest level.
"I have made the very difficult decision to pull out of the upcoming IPL. I apologise unreservedly to the Delhi Capitals and their supporters."
He further elaborated on his reasons, stating:
"I love cricket. Ever since I was a young boy, I have dreamt of playing for my country, and I am extremely thankful to have the opportunity to play the game I love at this level. With the guidance of people I trust, I have taken the time to seriously consider this decision."
Acknowledging that his choice may not sit well with everyone, Brook added:
"I know not everyone will understand, and I don’t expect them to, but I have to do what I believe is right. Playing for my country remains my priority and focus. I remain hugely grateful for the opportunities I have been given and the support I receive."
Delhi Capitals’ IPL 2025 Campaign Hit Hard
The Delhi Capitals management will now have to find a replacement for Brook at the last minute. With the IPL season just around the corner, this development has added an unexpected challenge for the team.
As DC aims to break their title drought, they will need to regroup quickly and fill the void left by Brook as they prepare for their opening clash on March 24.
