Khichi, a Dalit candidate fielded by the Arvind Kejriwal-led party, defeated Kishan Lal of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) by a narrow margin of just three votes.
Khinchi got 133 votes, while Lal got 130 votes. Two votes were declared invalid. Eight Congress councillors did not participate in the voting process, which boycotted the elections postponed from April due to a prolonged war of words between the AAP and the BJP. The Congress had demanded a full term for the mayor instead of the currently proposed short term.
