Maharashtra CM Oath: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Legislature Party leader Devendra Fadnavis was sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Maharashtra in a grand ceremony attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and many dignitaries on Thursday evening. Fadnavis has been crowned as the CM of Maharashtra for the third time. Fadnavis took oath along with two Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar and other members of the cabinet will take oath later.
Devendra Fadnavis became the 'Chief' of Maharashtra for the third time
This is the third time that Devendra Fadnavis has taken oath as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra. The swearing-in ceremony took place at Azad Maidan in South Mumbai. Governor C P Radhakrishnan administered the oath of office and secrecy to Fadnavis and two deputy chief ministers.
After the assembly elections in Maharashtra were held on November 20 and the results were announced on November 23, there were intense discussions for about two weeks. Then today the government has been formed under the leadership of Fadnavis.
Mahayuti has achieved a landslide victory in the assembly elections.
Fadnavis (54) emerged as a strong contender for the post after the BJP emerged as the strongest party in the 288-member Maharashtra Assembly elections, winning 132 seats. He represents the Nagpur South West constituency. Along with its allies - Shiv Sena and NCP, the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance has 230 seats in the Assembly. Ahead of the swearing-in ceremony, Fadnavis visited the famous Siddhivinayak temple here this morning and offered prayers there.
Earlier, Fadnavis, along with Shinde and Pawar, met Governor C P Radhakrishnan to stake a formal claim to form the government and handed over letters of support from the coalition partners. Earlier on Wednesday, Fadnavis was elected the leader of the BJP Legislature Party in a meeting.
How were the arrangements for the swearing-in ceremony?
Special arrangements have been made for the seating of 40,000 BJP supporters in this swearing-in ceremony and separate seating arrangements have been made for 2,000 dignitaries including leaders of different religions. More than 4,000 policemen were deployed for security during the swearing-in ceremony. Fadnavis has been the Chief Minister twice. He led the BJP-Shiv Sena government for five years from 2014 to 2019. After the 2019 elections, when the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena broke ties with the BJP over the post of Chief Minister, Fadnavis was later sworn in as the Chief Minister and Ajit Pawar became the Deputy Chief Minister. But this government lasted only 72 hours as Ajit Pawar could not get the support of a sufficient number of NCP MLAs.
Fadnavis became the Deputy Chief Minister when the Mahayuti government led by Shinde came to power after a split in the Shiv Sena. Later, Ajit Pawar broke away after a split in the Sharad Pawar-led NCP and joined the Mahayuti government as the second Deputy Chief Minister. Ajit Pawar (65) has taken oath as Deputy Chief Minister for the sixth time.
