Doctors Strike: The Indian Medical Association has announced a nationwide hunger strike in support of the junior doctors' protest in Kolkata. IMA has said that the purpose of this strike is to demand justice for the female doctor who was raped and murdered at Kolkata's R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital.
Who will lead on behalf of IMA?
"The nationwide strike will be led by the IMA Junior Doctors Network and Medical Students Network. Across the country, IMA Junior Doctors Network (JDN) will organize a fast from 6 am to 6 pm on Tuesday. IMA JDN will coordinate with the RDAs and support their local actions as well," the IMA said in a statement on Sunday.
Doctors' protest continues in Kolkata.
IMA said that young doctors of Kolkata are on a fast unto death for their legitimate demands. They are on the ninth day of their fast. Three of them have been admitted to the hospital. The movement is getting support from the people. IMA has appealed to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to accept their demands. IMA Bengal has announced solidarity by observing a fast in all local branches on Sunday.
Partial work shutdown in Bengal on 14 October too
The IMA has also urged all office bearers and resident doctors across the country to join the strike. The doctors' body said the protest site should ideally be near their medical colleges or campuses. Besides, doctors posted in various private hospitals in West Bengal have announced that they will observe a partial strike for 48 hours from October 14.
