Former Indian batting legend Sunil Gavaskar believes captain Rohit Sharma should be credited for the aggressive approach shown by his batsmen in India's spectacular seven-wicket win over Bangladesh in the rain-affected second Test in Kanpur.
The Kanpur Test was rain-hit for two days and conditions were challenging due to a wet outfield. India performed brilliantly in their first innings and set new records for the fastest 50, 100, 150, 200 and 250 runs in the longest format. India then declared the innings at 285/9. Then, after dismissing Bangladesh early in the second innings too, they chased down 95 in 17.2 overs to win the series 2-0.
After this victory, everyone was saluting Gautam Gambhir's coaching and his thinking, but now Sunil Gavaskar wrote a column for Sports Star that Rohit Sharma should be given credit for Team India's aggressive thinking. Giving credit to Gautam Gambhir is like buttering him up. Gavaskar said that it has been only two months since Gambhir took over the coaching responsibility.
He himself never batted fast in McCullum's style. Rohit Sharma definitely bats like this. He bats for the team, not for himself. In the first innings of the Kanpur Test, Rohit attacked Bangladesh and after that all the Indian batsmen batted in the same manner.
The next challenge for the table-toppers is New Zealand, who will play a three-match Test series from October 16 to November 5 in Bengaluru, Pune and Mumbai.
Gavaskar said, "The Bangladesh game is over and now the Kiwi team will be the target of Rohit and his boys. Will they be able to dominate the Kiwi team like Bangladesh? We will know soon."
