According to the legend, Govardhan Puja was started by Lord Krishna to break the pride of Indra. In Dwapar Yuga, when Lord Vishnu came in the form of Krishna, he spent his childhood in Braj. Seeing the people of Braj worshiping Govardhan mountain, Indra got very angry and he filled the entire Braj with storm and water. Then Lord Krishna lifted Govardhan mountain on his index finger to protect the people of Braj. Since then, every year the people of Braj started worshiping Lord Krishna and Govardhan.
