The names of the companies that have got Maharatna status before HAL are NTPC, ONGC, SEAL, BHEL, IOC, HPCL, Coal India, GAIL, BPCL, Power Grid, PFC, REC, and Oil India.

When and who gets the Maharatna status?

• If a PSU fulfills certain criteria, it is eligible for "Maharatna" status.
• The company should already have "Navratna" status.
• Should be listed on Indian stock exchanges.
• Should conform to minimum shareholding norms.
• Average annual turnover should be more than Rs 25,000 crore and average annual net worth should be more than Rs 15,000 crore in the last three years.
• Apart from a good global presence, there should be an average annual net profit of more than Rs 5,000 crore in the last three years.
