CJI DY Chandrachud Farewell Speech: The current Chief Justice of the country DY Chandrachud will retire on Sunday. When CJI DY Chandrachud attended the farewell ceremony on his last working day on Friday, he talked about social media trolling and the challenges he faced after joining the judiciary in his speech. During this, he also remembered his parents and apologized.

What did the CJI say about trolls?

Chief Justice DY Chandrachud said in his farewell speech that there is no greater feeling than serving the needy and people whom he did not know or never met. At the farewell ceremony, Supreme Court Chief Justice DY Chandrachud openly responded to the trolls. The CJI said that I am one of the most trolled judges in the system. The CJI responded to this with a Shayari and said ... Opposition enhances my personality. I respect my enemies a lot. "The CJI said that but my shoulders are so strong that I can bear all the criticism. What will happen to the people who troll me from Monday? They will become unemployed.

CJI apologized for this

Chief Justice Chandrachud expressed his gratitude to all those who contributed to his journey, senior advocates, juniors, officers and staff, and acknowledged that each of them played a role in shaping his understanding of law and life. He apologised for any inadvertent mistake or misunderstanding, saying, "If I have ever hurt anyone, I apologize to you."

What did the CJI say about his successor?

The Chief Justice said- "I was always aware of the impressive presence of the great people of this Court and the responsibility that comes with sitting in this position. But at the end of the day, it is not about any individual, it is about the institution and the purpose of justice that we uphold here."

He praised his colleagues, particularly highlighting the time he spent on the bench with Justices Pardiwala and Mishra.

The Chief Justice also expressed his confidence in the future of the Court and assured the legal community that his successor Justice Khanna would lead the Court with the same dedication and vision. He described Justice Khanna as "respected and committed to justice".

Over 500 decisions

A man of his word, Justice Chandrachud wrote more than 500 judgments, some of which were criticised and many were praised. Chandrachud’s legacy also has a physical manifestation – a reimagined Goddess of Justice. Earlier, the Goddess of Justice was in Greek garb and blindfolded. It has been replaced by a new six-foot-tall statue, holding a scale in one hand and the Constitution in place of a sword in the other. The new Goddess of Justice, dressed in a sari, has a crown on her head and is not blindfolded.

Father was also Chief Justice

The outgoing Chief Justice's father, YV Chandrachud, was also the Chief Justice (1978 to 1985), which was the longest tenure on this post. This is the only example of a father and son holding the highest post in the Supreme Court. DY Chandrachud, who studied at St. Stephen's College in Delhi and the Campus Law Center of Delhi University (DU) and then obtained LLM and doctorate degrees from Harvard Law School, was appointed Chief Justice on 9 November 2022. The list of judgments written by him is long and covers almost all aspects of law.
