The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) and the National Council for Promotion of Sindhi Language (NCPSL) reaffirmed their commitment to preserving and promoting the Sindhi language, literature, and culture by renewing the Sindhi Chair at IGNOU. A formal signing ceremony for the renewal took place on March 11, marking another milestone in their collaboration.

Strengthening the Sindhi Chair at IGNOU

The Sindhi Chair, housed within the School of Translation Studies and Training (SOTST), IGNOU, plays a crucial role in advancing Sindhi language studies. During the event, Prof. Uma Kanjilal, Vice Chancellor of IGNOU, highlighted the chair’s efforts in fostering Sindhi heritage through various academic initiatives, including:

  • Post Graduate Diploma in Sindhi-Hindi-Sindhi Translation (PGDSHST) – Offered through Open and Distance Learning (ODL), this program aims to bridge linguistic gaps and promote bilingual proficiency.
  • ‘MIL Sindhi’ Course – A 6-credit undergraduate program designed to enhance students' understanding of Sindhi language and culture.

Prof. Kanjilal emphasized that continued collaboration between IGNOU and NCPSL would enable wider outreach and ensure that Sindhi literature and traditions remain accessible to future generations. She also stressed the need for introducing additional academic programs to further enrich the study and preservation of Sindhi heritage.

A Ceremony Marked by Distinguished Presence

The event commenced with a Welcome Address by Dr. Harish Kumar Sethi, Director of SOTST, IGNOU, followed by a Special Address from Prof. Ravi Prakash Tekchandani, Director of NCPSL.

The official Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) renewal was signed by:

The signing was witnessed by the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, faculty members, and senior officials, including Directors of various Schools and Heads of different Divisions.

The MoU will remain valid for three years, ensuring sustained efforts in promoting Sindhi language and culture.

The event concluded with a Vote of Thanks by Dr. Chitresh Soni, Assistant Professor, SOTST, IGNOU. The proceedings were expertly moderated by Sh. Ram Kishor, Assistant Professor, SOTST, IGNOU.

With this renewed partnership, IGNOU and NCPSL continue their mission of preserving, promoting, and expanding Sindhi language education, ensuring its cultural legacy remains alive for generations to come.
