A third-year B.Tech student from Telangana, studying Mathematics and Computing at IIT Patna, died by suicide on Tuesday after allegedly jumping from the seventh floor of a building at the institute’s Amhara (Bihta) campus. The exact reason behind the tragic incident remains unknown.

Campus Unrest Following the Incident

The incident sent shockwaves through the campus, leading to widespread protests by students demanding a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death. The growing unrest prompted authorities to deploy additional police forces to maintain order.

Details of the Incident

According to police reports, the student jumped from the building around 11:30 AM, and the IIT Patna police station was informed by noon. Upon reaching the scene, police officials, along with IIT Patna Director Prof. TN Singh, found the student lying in a pool of blood near the hostel building.

Danapur Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Pankaj Kumar Mishra confirmed the incident, stating that they received information about a student jumping off the roof and that a detailed investigation is underway.

Medical Response and Official Statement

The student was immediately rushed to Netaji Subhash Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead. Following the tragedy, IIT Patna Registrar Sanjay Kumar released a press statement confirming that the student fell from the hostel balcony and was taken to the hospital, but could not be saved.

The incident has once again raised concerns about mental health awareness and support systems in India’s premier engineering institutes, as students and authorities grapple with yet another unfortunate loss.
