Melbourne: India batsman Sunil Gavaskar and former Australia opener Justin Langer on Friday said Virat Kohli and Yashasvi Jaiswal should not have attempted the risky single that cost Australia a crucial wicket in the fourth Test. Jaiswal, who hit a blazing 82 off 118 balls on the second day of the fourth Test, was caught well away from his crease while going for a quick single due to a misunderstanding with Kohli (36).

That run wasn't really necessary

Gavaskar told 'Star Sports', 'It would have been a quick run and a player like Virat Kohli would have definitely made it. But the thing was that he looked towards the fielder. When you look towards the fielder, when you turn, you lose that crucial second. Your balance is completely disturbed. And it would have been a difficult run. I think why do you need to take a run in a situation that involves risk? You are batting well, runs are being scored. It was not really necessary to take a risk in that situation.'

Kohli's concentration was distracted after Jaiswal was run out

However, Gavaskar said Kohli could have completed the run if he was fully committed to it as 'Kohli is a brilliant player between the wickets.'

This led to Jaiswal being run out and this distracted Kohli who got out on a ball going outside the off stump. Langer said, 'I think it was a risky run because Pat Cummins is a great athlete. Even if he had not caught it, in Pat Cummins' mind he would have gone to the non-striker. It would have been close but I thought it was a risky run.'

That run was very risky

He said, 'There was no need for it at that stage of the match. They were in a good position. They kept it under complete control. As fast as he is, I thought it was a very risky run. I love to see people fall and run fast but that was a risky run. I think that's what Virat was saying.'
