Sydney: Virat Kohli's catch in the fifth test match being played between Australia and India has become a topic of discussion. Australian player Steve Smith believes that Virat Kohli was caught out. Because, his hand was under the ball. Opinions are divided in the cricket world on this matter.
Third umpire declared Virat not out
Scott Boland dismissed Yashasvi Jaiswal at the Sydney Cricket Ground. After this, he was about to take his second consecutive wicket, Kohli's ball took the outside edge of his bat and Smith standing at second slip took the catch by diving to his right at second slip. However, Smith lost his balance and threw the ball in the air which was caught by Marnus Labuschagne standing in the gully. After this, TV umpire Joel Wilson saw the various camera angles and declared Kohli not out.
Smith said, he caught the ball cleanly
Speaking to broadcaster Fox Sports during the lunch break, Smith remained adamant that he had taken the catch cleanly. "There's no denying that. But the umpire has given the decision and now we move on." Former Australia fast bowler Glenn McGrath said on ABC Sport that it was a 50/50 decision but he felt Kohli was out. "As cricketers, we all feel he's out, the ball never actually touched the ground. If I'm batting I'm probably happy to get out of there but I'm also happy for (him) to be there.
Michael Vaughan declared Virat out
Speaking on Fox Sports, former England captain Michael Vaughan also ruled Kohli out. "As a batsman you need a bit of luck and I think Virat Kohli got a bit of luck (on his first ball). I think he got out. Australia should have got their third wicket."
Alysse Healy said the decision was difficult
Australia women's team captain Alyssa Healy expressed similar thoughts. "It's a tricky one, because if you watch it in live motion, it looks out of bounds - and Steve Smith clearly felt like his hand was under it as well. But the rules they have in modern times, if (it looks like) any small piece of the ball is on the ground, the umpire has to say it's not out."
Kohli was out according to Langer as well
Former Australia opener and coach Justin Langer said on Channel Seven that according to him Kohli was also out. "His fingers were under the ball. I felt like he was instinctively trying to hit the ball straight up. According to me, the finger was still under the ball. It should have been a great catch for Australia."
