Jasprit Bumrah injury update: Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, who is suffering from back spasms, is likely to be rested from the majority of India's home white-ball series against England with an eye on the ICC Champions Trophy starting February 19.
Bumrah was India's best performer with 32 wickets in the 1-3 defeat to Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy that ended on Sunday. The 30-year-old could not bowl in Australia's second innings due to back spasms. He bowled more than 150 overs in the five-match series.
Bumrah is under the observation of the medical team
Bumrah has been injured due to excessive workload and the BCCI medical team will try to ensure that he is ready for the major ICC (International Cricket Council) event. India's performance in this competition will largely depend on Bumrah's presence. A source associated with the matter said that the grade (level of injury) of Bumrah's back spasm is not yet known.
India will begin their Champions Trophy campaign against Bangladesh on February 20 in Dubai. If Bumrah's injury is grade one, he will have to spend at least three weeks in rehabilitation before returning to the game (RTP).
May return in ODI series
A grade two injury can take six weeks to recover from, while grade three, which is considered serious, requires at least three months of rest and rehabilitation. It was almost certain that Bumrah would not play the bilateral T20 International series against England as there is no World Cup for this format this year. Considering the Champions Trophy, he was expected to play at least two of the three ODIs against England.
Now, however, the severity of his injury will determine whether he will be able to play in the 50-over format against England or not. The last match of this series will be played in Ahmedabad on February 12. India will play a five-match T20 series and a three-match ODI series against England from January 22.
