Johannesburg: Rinku Singh's batting order and poor form will be a cause of concern for the Indian team trying to win the decisive fourth T20 match and the series against South Africa on Friday. Apart from the centuries of Sanju Samson and Tilak Verma, the Indian batsmen have not performed effectively. India is currently leading the series 2-1 but the batsmen will have a huge responsibility to win 3-1.
The Wanderers have been lucky for India.
Wanderers has always been lucky for India where it won the first T20 World Cup by defeating Pakistan in 2007. In the last T20 series a year ago, captain Suryakumar Yadav scored a century and led the team to victory. Under Suryakumar's captaincy, India has won 13 out of 16 matches, and this time they would like to return with a series win. Last time the series was drawn 1-1 as one match was washed out due to rain.
Rinku's form is a matter of concern for Team India.
The form of Rinku Singh, one of the most aggressive batsmen in T20 cricket, is also a matter of concern as he has not been able to play well for the last few months. It seems that he is not able to play comfortably by batting at number six or seven. The next T20 World Cup in India is in 2026 and Suryakumar has enough time to instill confidence in Rinku and bring his performance back on track. The Indian team cannot take the risk of losing a talented cricketer like him in the absence of clarity. In the current series, Rinku batted at number six in two matches and at number seven in one match and could score only 28 runs.
Rinku's confidence has been affected.
Coming down the order and scoring 11, 9, or 8 runs is not a matter of concern but the real concern is that he played a total of 34 balls for this. During the IPL too, Rinku got to play only 113 balls in 15 matches i.e. 7.5 balls per match. As a finisher, Rinku can get only about ten balls in each innings. This has probably affected his confidence as he is not able to understand whether he should play aggressively or remain in a supporting role.
It is difficult to lift Rinku up.
Rinku has performed well by batting at number five most of the time. But when Sanju Samson is batting as an opener and Tilak Verma at number three, it is difficult to field Rinku before Hardik Pandya. The team management will have to find an immediate solution to this issue. India has tried 12 of its 15 players in the first three matches and now it remains to be seen whether fast bowler Yash Dayal or Vaishak Vijaykumar gets the first chance.
The two teams are as follows:
