What exactly is a slip disc?

A slip disc or a herniated disc is a painful condition that stems from the bulging of a spinal disc and, in the worst case, may even necessitate surgery.

A structure comprising of bones, your spinal column is made up of seven bones in the cervical spine, 12 in the thoracic spine, and five in the lumbar spine, and continues on to the sacrum and coccyx at the bottom of the spine. The bones are cushioned by the disks that are in place to prevent damage caused by daily activities such as walking, lifting and twisting. These activities are enough to damage the weaker parts of the disk which causes it to slip.

How to exercise with a slipped or herniated disc?

Gentle exercises, in expert’s opinion, can go a long way in relieving the pain associated with a herniated disk. To prevent a herniated disk, flexibility can be improved through neck, back, and hamstring stretches.

You may also do hamstring exercises which can help in stretching out the hamstring muscles alongside relieving tightness in the lower back and the legs. In addition, gentle neck stretches can also be done for neck soreness. Among the causes of neck and shoulder pain is compression of the nerves in the cervical region.

Experts note that performing light exercises increases the strength of the muscles that hold the spine in place which decreases the strain on the spine. They also assist in enhancing the range of motion of the spine and disc’s and may decrease the chances of a herniated disc from happening. Some other light exercises that are useful for a herniated disc include:

Yoga

Swimming

Walking

Cycling
