At the ET NOW Global Business Summit 2025, Dr. Sama Bilbao y León, Director General of the World Nuclear Association, highlighted India’s strategic focus on energy security and sustainability, emphasizing its growing dominance in nuclear energy.

Speaking on Day 1 of the 9th edition of the summit at the Taj Palace in New Delhi, she noted:

“India has linked energy, affordable and clean 24/7 electricity, to progress and socio-economic development. Today, it stands as a powerhouse in nuclear energy.”

The Global Impact of Nuclear Energy

Dr. Bilbao y León underlined that nuclear energy currently supplies 10% of the world’s electricity. She further emphasized:

  • It is the largest source of electricity in OECD countries.
  • It ranks second only to hydro in carbon-free electricity worldwide.
  • It accounts for 25% of global carbon-free power.

She also pointed out that many nations are extending the operational lifespan of their nuclear plants to 60, 80, or even 100 years, ensuring long-term energy stability.

Future of Nuclear Power and Energy Security

When asked about new reactors and global energy demand, Dr. Bilbao y León explained that:

  • Countries across all continents are investing in advanced nuclear reactors, including small, medium, large, and micro-reactors.
  • Energy security has become a top priority, with nations striving for self-sufficiency and independence.
  • Industries with high energy demands are turning back to nuclear power for 24/7 reliability.
  • The goal is to ensure that affordable and accessible energy reaches everyone, without leaving any region behind.
