An Iranian connection has been claimed in the assassination of US President-elect Donald Trump. This claim has been made by the US. The US Justice Department on Friday announced criminal charges in connection with Iran's failed plot to assassinate newly elected President Donald Trump.
Revolutionary Guard officer involved
A criminal complaint filed in federal court in Manhattan alleges that an officer in Iran's paramilitary Revolutionary Guard (whose name is not known) in September directed a contact of his to plot to keep an eye on Trump and ultimately assassinate him.
Afghan citizen was Iranian agent
According to news agency AP, investigators learned about the plot to assassinate Trump when questioning Farhad Shakeri, an Afghan national identified by authorities as an agent of the Iranian government who was deported from the US after being jailed for robbery.
Two other people were also involved
According to a criminal complaint unsealed in federal court in Manhattan, he told investigators that an officer in Iran's paramilitary Revolutionary Guard instructed him last September to devise a plan within seven days to monitor Trump and ultimately kill him. Authorities say two other men were recruited to participate in other killings, including that of a prominent Iranian American journalist who was arrested Friday. Shakeri remains in Iran.
