More than 8,80,000 people displaced in Syria
More than 880,000 people have been displaced as violent conflict in Syria escalated, UN humanitarian aid workers said. UN partners estimated that about 6 percent of the displaced live with at least one form of disability, reports Xinhua news agency. "Return activities have accelerated, with partners reporting the return of more than 220,000 people on Sunday. In addition, more than 40,000 displaced people are living in about 250 collective centers in northeastern Syria," the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said.
The UN and partners are supplying food, water, cash, tents and blankets, the office said. The global team is also deploying medical teams and supplies. The Syrian Arab Red Crescent and the International Committee of the Red Cross, in collaboration with the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), on Friday launched a joint mission to carry out urgent and critical repairs to the Tishrin Dam facility in Syria's Aleppo province. UNICEF also arranged fuel to power backup generators, ensuring safe drainage of the dam and safeguarding water supplies. Violence near the dam over the past week has disrupted power, water and other vital services, affecting millions of people in the region.
On Monday, UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher met Syrian transitional officials in Damascus to discuss the relief response. "At a time of such rapid change and long-term need in the region, Fletcher's visit will also include stops in Lebanon, Turkey and Jordan," OCHA said of his week-long Middle East trip.
8 members of the same family killed in Israeli attack
At least eight people from the same family, most of them women and children, were killed in an Israeli attack in Gaza, Palestinian medical workers said on Tuesday. According to the Health Ministry's ambulance and emergency service, a house in the central Gaza city's neighboring town of Daraz was attacked late Monday night. Rescuers recovered the bodies of eight people, including two women and four children, from under the rubble. According to a casualty list obtained by The Associated Press, the bodies recovered from the rubble included those of a father and his three children and the children's grandmother. There was no immediate comment from the Israeli military on the attack.
According to the Gaza Health Ministry, more than 45,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli bombing and aggression in Gaza over the past 14 months. The ministry's figures do not distinguish between combatants and civilians, but it says more than half of the dead were women and children. Israel launched the campaign in retaliation for Hamas' October 7, 2023, attack on southern Israel, in which the militants killed about 1,200 people and kidnapped 250 others, of whom about 100 are still in captivity.
