The central government has begun the process of building a memorial in honour of former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh. Several locations have been suggested for the memorial and Dr Singh's family has been given options to choose from. Sources said the final decision on the location will pave the way for the construction process, but some important formalities have to be completed before work can begin.

One of the primary requirements for the memorial is the formation of a trust. Under the current policy, land for such memorials can only be allotted to a trust and not to individuals or other entities. This trust will play a key role in the application process for land allotment. Once the trust is formed it will formally request land for the memorial and after the allotment a Memorandum of Understanding will be signed with the Central Public Works Department to start the construction of the memorial.

Possible locations include Raj Ghat, Rashtriya Smriti Sthal and areas around Kisan Ghat

Sources say the government is considering allocating one to one and a half acres of land for Dr Singh's memorial. According to sources, possible locations for the site include areas around Rajghat, Rashtriya Smriti Sthal and Kisan Ghat, which are important and symbolic places in the political history of the country. Officials of the Urban Development Ministry have visited areas around Rajghat to evaluate the suitability of these places.

Which will further increase the historical importance of this place

Apart from these famous sites, there is also a possibility of selecting a location near the mausoleums of leaders of the Nehru-Gandhi family such as Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and Sanjay Gandhi. This will put Dr Manmohan Singh's memorial close to the mausoleums of other prominent political figures, further increasing the historical significance of the site.

Dr. Manmohan Singh died on 26 December

Though the deliberations are still on, the formation of the trust and the final selection of the memorial site will soon lead to the construction of a memorial that will honour the legacy of Dr Manmohan Singh as a statesman and leader of India. Earlier, the Union Home Ministry had issued a statement saying that the government has decided to allocate space for Manmohan Singh's memorial and his family and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge have been informed about it. Dr Manmohan Singh, one of the longest-serving Prime Ministers of the country, passed away on 26 December. He was considered the architect of economic reforms.
