Manmohan Singh: The father of economic reforms and a strong politician

Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will be remembered as the father of economic reforms in India, the one who freed it from the license Raj and the savior who rescued the country from a situation when even its gold reserves were mortgaged. Known as a strong politician, Dr. Manmohan Singh was the architect of present India and a man of great scholarship. Humble, scholarly, soft-spoken and a believer in consensus, Manmohan Singh died on Thursday night at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi. He was 92 years old.

As a Congress leader, he led the country for 10 years from 2004-2014 and before that as Finance Minister, he helped build the country's economic structure. He was a well-known figure in the financial and economic sector globally. His government launched revolutionary schemes like the Right to Information (RTI), Right to Education (RTE) and MNREGA. Manmohan Singh started his life in poverty. Once studying in the dim light of a kerosene lamp in his village, which was deprived of electricity, Manmohan Singh later became a distinguished academician. He was a reluctant politician who did not like the rough and tumble mainstream politics.

Manmohan had refused to accept the post of Prime Minister

Sonia Gandhi refused to accept the post of Prime Minister despite requests from her party and when she chose Manmohan Singh for the top post, much to everyone's surprise, Manmohan Singh, an academic bureaucrat, thus became the 14th Prime Minister of India in 2004. He was sworn in as Prime Minister for the first time on 22 May 2004 and for the second time on 22 May 2009.

Manmohan Singh led the country for 10 years and during this time the equation between Sonia Gandhi and Singh is often cited as an example of a balanced partnership. The understanding between the two is an example of what a working relationship should really be like.
