One Nation One Election: One Nation One Election Bill has been passed in the cabinet. According to the information received, One Nation One Election Bill will be presented in the Parliament. This information has come from sources.
now what next
The cabinet has already approved the report of the Ram Nath Kovind Committee on One Country One Election. Sources said the government now wants to build a consensus on the bill and may send it to the Joint Parliamentary Committee or JPC for detailed discussions. The JPC will hold discussions with representatives of all political parties. Sources said other stakeholders will also be involved in the process. Speakers of all state assemblies may also be called along with intellectuals from across the country. Opinion of the common people will also be taken. Sources said the government initially wants to involve the people and ways and means to achieve this may be discussed later.
What are the challenges before the government?
Implementing the "One Nation One Election" plan will involve at least six bills to amend the Constitution and the government will need a two-thirds majority in Parliament. Though the NDA has a simple majority in both Houses of Parliament, achieving a two-thirds majority in either House could be a tough task. Of the 245 seats in the Rajya Sabha, the NDA has 112, while the opposition parties have 85. For a two-thirds majority, the government needs at least 164 votes. In the Lok Sabha too, the NDA has 292 out of 545 seats. The two-thirds majority figure is 364.
The opposition is protesting
The opposition has called this idea impractical and has pointed to the logistical challenges faced by the Election Commission in conducting elections in the state. The opposition is directly cornering the government on this issue.
