PAK vs ENG Day 3 Highlights: Joe Root's 35th century and Harry Brook's unbeaten century helped England score 492 runs for the loss of three wickets to the stumps on the third day of the first cricket test against Pakistan here on Wednesday. Root surpassed Alastair Cook to become the highest run scorer for England in Tests. He is playing after scoring 176 runs. Yorkshire teammate Harry Brook has scored an unbeaten 141 runs in 173 balls.
These two have so far made an unbeaten partnership of 243 runs by hitting 24 boundaries and both of them troubled the Pakistani bowlers a lot. Due to their 'baseball' aggressive batting, England's team is now lagging behind Pakistan by 64 runs after batting for three and a half sessions. The home team had scored 556 runs in five and a half sessions.
Root batted the whole day in the scorching heat, playing at 32 runs. He made two more century partnerships with Ben Duckett (84 runs) and Zak Crawley (78 runs). Duckett and Crawley's wickets fell in the first two sessions. Pakistan's Naseem Shah (1 wicket for 87 runs) and Shaheen Shah Afridi (1 wicket for 88 runs) were not very effective. They did not get any reverse swing from the old ball.
Leg spinner Abrar Ahmed also could not get any turn and he gave 174 runs in his 35 overs but could not take any wicket. Root broke Cook's record by scoring 71 runs on the third day and became England's highest run scorer in the longest format of cricket. He surpassed the 12,472 runs of the retired Cook as soon as he reached 71 runs by hitting a four during England's first innings.
The 33-year-old Root thus remains fifth in the list of all-time highest run-scorers in Test cricket, behind Indian star Sachin Tendulkar (15,921), Australia's Ricky Ponting (13,378), South Africa's Jacques Kallis (13,289) and India's Rahul Dravid (13,288).
All four players above Root have retired.
