Government sources said that there is a plan to provide 1.25 lakh internship opportunities in the current financial year. An expenditure of Rs 800 crore is estimated on this. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had said in her budget speech for the financial year 2024-25 that the government would launch a comprehensive scheme to provide internships. Under this, one crore youth will be allowed to train in 500 top companies in five years. They will get a chance to learn the tricks of working in a real business environment, and various business sectors for 12 months and also get employment opportunities.

The portal has been developed by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs." The youth selected for the internship will be given insurance coverage under Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana and Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana. The premium for this will be paid by the government. Apart from this, companies can provide additional accident insurance to the selected candidate.

Sources said the pilot project is expected to be completed in the first week of December. After that, it will be fully implemented. The rule of reservation in central government jobs will also be applicable in this scheme. He said that partner companies can provide internship opportunities through the portal. Top companies for the pilot project have been identified based on their average CSR (corporate social responsibility) expenditure in the last three years.

Candidates who want training can register on the portal from the second week of October. The internship will be for one year. Any other company/bank/financial institution can participate in this scheme with the approval of the ministry. Trainees will be provided financial assistance of Rs 5,000 per month. Out of the total amount, the government will deposit Rs 4,500 directly into the bank account of the selected candidate while the company will pay Rs 500 from its CSR fund.

Sources said that youth between 21 and 24 years of age who are not doing full-time jobs or studies can apply for this through the portal. Candidates involved in online/distance learning programs are eligible to apply. Regarding the eligibility criteria, sources said that candidates who have passed high school, or higher secondary school, have an ITI certificate, or diploma from the polytechnic institute, or are graduates with degrees like BA, B.Sc, B.Com, BCA, BBA, B.Pharma will be eligible for this.
