Gadkari in LS on deaths in road accidents : Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari expressed disappointment over the increasing number of casualties despite the government's continuous efforts to reduce deaths in road accidents. Gadkari said that this is happening because people neither have respect for the law nor fear of the law. Responding during Question Hour in the Lok Sabha, Gadkari said that he himself has been a victim of a road accident and is sensitive about this issue.

Four factors that can reduce accidents

Gadkari said four factors can help reduce road accidents - road engineering, automobile engineering, law enforcement, and education of people. He said the biggest problem of society is that they neither have respect for the law nor fear of the law. People do not stop at red signals, and do not wear helmets, and 30,000 people die just because they do not wear helmets. I myself have been a victim of this, when I was the leader of the opposition in Maharashtra, my leg was broken in four places in an accident and I am constantly sensitive about it.

1.68 lakh deaths in road accidents

Gadkari said, I have no hesitation in accepting this, but am distressed that despite hard work, there have been 1.68 lakh deaths in road accidents this year. A large number of these deaths occurred because the rules of the roads were not strictly enforced. Without the cooperation of the public representatives, media, or society, this is not possible. We have also increased the fines but people do not follow the rules.

He said, you broke the signal in front of me.

Gadkari said a car broke a traffic signal in front of him on Wednesday. The minister urged the chairman to hold a separate discussion on the issue and said the government was committed to improving the situation. "The problem is also that there are some black spots and the government has already decided to spend Rs 40,000 crore on the black spots. As per the faults identified in the project report, there are black spots and we are very committed to it," he said.
