QS Asia University Rankings 2025 Release Date : India has overtaken China in the QS Asia University Rankings 2025 for the second consecutive year, indicating rapid improvement in the country's higher education. 193 higher education institutions of India have been included in this list. The country has shown the highest increase in university representation. 21 new entries have also been added to this list.
According to the latest annual list of Asia's best universities released by global higher education analyst Quacquarelli Symonds, India is followed by China with 135 universities and Japan with 115 universities in the second and third positions respectively.

India had overtaken China in the 2024 QS rankings with 148 universities. Last year, only 133 academic institutions from China featured in the list. The 2025 edition includes 984 universities across 25 higher education systems in Asia. This is 127 more than last year.
Nearly seven Indian universities are ranked among the top 100 institutions in Asia.

IIT Delhi (IITD) topped the list, followed by IIT Bombay which slipped to second place. Other names include University of Delhi, IISc Bangalore, IIT Madras, IIT Kharagpur and IIT Kanpur.
"India's academic strength is demonstrated by its research output and high number of PhD-trained faculty, who enhance the international reputation of its universities, setting a benchmark on the regional and global stage," QS CEO Jessica Turner said in a statement.
Indian universities scored 75 per cent in academic reputation, while in employer reputation it was 73 per cent.

The report revealed that research productivity is a major strength of Indian universities. Four of the top five Asian universities in 'faculty on papers' are Indian, with Anna University coming in second.
Furthermore, Indian universities also showed a high level of specialisation of staff, with eight universities ranking second in 'employees with PhDs'.
QS Asia University RankingsHowever, the country did not perform well in the internationalisation indicator 'International Students'. Amity University ranked 87th in this list, while no other Indian institution could make it to the top 100.
