2000 Rupees Note Update: The Reserve Bank of India ( RBI ) on Monday (November 4, 2024) said that 98.04 percent of 2000 rupee banknotes have returned to the banking system and only Rs 6,970 crore worth of such notes are with the public. The RBI had announced the withdrawal of the 2000 rupee banknote from circulation on May 19, 2023.
RBI said that at the close of business on May 19, 2023, a total of Rs 3.56 lakh crore worth of Rs 2000 banknotes were in circulation. The value of the notes in circulation was reduced to Rs 6,970 crore at the close of business on October 31, 2024. The statement said that thus 98.04 percent of the Rs 2000 notes in circulation till May 19, 2023, have been returned.
The facility to deposit or exchange these notes was available in all bank branches till October 7, 2023. This facility is still available in 19 issue offices of RBI.
