With IPL 2025 fast approaching, all franchises have finalized their captains—except Delhi Capitals (DC). Following Rishabh Pant's exit, DC was on the lookout for a new leader. While names like KL Rahul and Faf du Plessis were in contention, latest reports indicate that Axar Patel is likely to take over the captaincy.
Axar Patel to Lead Delhi Capitals?
According to an IANS report, Delhi Capitals offered the captaincy to KL Rahul, but he turned it down, preferring to focus on his performance as a player. As a result, Axar Patel is expected to be named the new skipper.
"Yes, Axar Patel is likely to be named as Delhi Capitals skipper for IPL 2025. The franchise had asked KL Rahul to be the team's captain, but he very much wishes to contribute for the side as a player in the upcoming tournament," sources told IANS.
Why Did KL Rahul Decline DC’s Captaincy Offer?
- Rahul has led Team India in all three formats and has previous IPL captaincy experience with Punjab Kings (2020-2021) and Lucknow Super Giants (2022-2024).
- However, sources suggest that Rahul prefers to focus on his batting rather than taking on leadership responsibilities at DC.
Axar Patel’s Leadership Credentials
While Axar Patel has never captained an IPL team, he was recently included in Team India’s leadership group for the five-match T20I series against England ahead of the Champions Trophy.
Axar’s Strengths as a Captain:
Reliable all-rounder with experience in pressure situations.
Strong leadership potential, having mentored younger players in the past.
A key performer for Delhi Capitals over the years.
If appointed, Axar’s biggest challenge will be leading DC to their maiden IPL trophy, as the franchise has only played one final in IPL history (2020).

Apart from a new captain, Delhi Capitals will also have a fresh head coach in Hemang Badani.
Badani’s Coaching Experience:
- Worked with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the IPL.
- Known for his analytical approach and player development skills.
With both a new captain and a new head coach, Delhi Capitals are set for a fresh start in IPL 2025.
