India’s Test cricket campaign has faced a severe downturn in recent months. The team suffered a shocking 3-0 whitewash at home against New Zealand, followed by a 1-3 series loss to Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. As a result, India failed to qualify for the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 final—a first in the tournament’s history.
Rohit Sharma's Future in Test Cricket Uncertain
Rohit Sharma, who captained India during these losses, is now under intense scrutiny. His poor form with the bat has raised concerns about his future in red-ball cricket, especially with the crucial England tour in June 2025 approaching.
According to a PTI report, Rohit Sharma is unlikely to be picked in India's Test squad again. Instead, vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah is expected to take over as captain for the five-match Test series against England in June-July 2025.
"He (Jasprit Bumrah) can come back for Mumbai Indians in the IPL and then lead India in England, as Rohit Sharma is unlikely to be picked for Tests again," a source told PTI.
Bumrah's Captaincy Experience and India’s Historic Win in Perth
Jasprit Bumrah has led India in three Test matches, including India’s historic 295-run victory against Australia in Perth, their only win in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024/25.
With India looking for fresh leadership in Test cricket, Bumrah's elevation as captain could mark a new chapter for the team in the longest format.
Why Was Jasprit Bumrah Left Out of the Champions Trophy 2025 Squad?
Bumrah is currently sidelined with a lower back injury and has been ruled out of the Champions Trophy 2025. The main reason behind his exclusion, according to PTI, is that he hasn’t started bowling at full intensity yet.
"It is understood that the main concern was that Bumrah is yet to start bowling at full tilt, and sources say it would have been very difficult to get him match-fit in such a short time."
Bumrah is expected to make his comeback during IPL 2025 for Mumbai Indians, before taking on the responsibility of leading India in the England Test series.
What’s Next for Team India?
With Rohit Sharma’s Test future uncertain, India will have to rebuild their red-ball squad ahead of the crucial England tour in June-July 2025. If Bumrah takes over as captain, it will mark a new leadership era for India's Test team.
Meanwhile, India will aim to bounce back in white-ball cricket as they prepare for the Champions Trophy 2025 in Dubai, starting February 20.
