SMAT 2024: Shreyas Iyer was on Sunday named captain of a 17-member Mumbai squad for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy to be played from November 23 to December 15, which also includes Prithvi Shaw. The squad also includes Ajinkya Rahane, who captained Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy in the first half of the recently concluded competition, and comeback batsman Siddesh Lad.
Iyer has been in great form this Ranji Trophy season and is looking to make a comeback into the Indian team, scoring 452 runs at an average of 90.40 with two centuries. All the centuries that Iyer has scored this year are big ones as the right-handed batsman scored a quickfire 233 (228 balls, 24x4, 9x6) against Odisha and then 142 (190 balls, 12x4, 4x6) against Maharashtra to play a key role in Mumbai's two consecutive wins.
The 25-year-old Shaw has now been re-added to the squad for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy after being dropped from the Ranji Trophy squad due to fitness and disciplinary issues. Spin-bowling all-rounder Tanush Kotian, who was part of India A's unofficial Test in Australia, has also been included in the Mumbai squad along with experienced all-rounder Shardul Thakur.
