New Delhi: India vice-captain Shubman Gill is among the key players who will be rested for the three-match T20 International series against Bangladesh starting October 7 as part of the Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) workload management policy. Gill, who bats at number three for India in Tests, is a vital cog in the team's top order along with Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Yashasvi Jaiswal and is expected to play all 10 Tests this season.
Gill and other players will get rest in T20.
Apart from Gill, some other important players will also be rested keeping in mind the three-Test series against New Zealand. India will begin its upcoming international season with a two-Test series against Bangladesh in Chennai from September 19, the second Test of which will be played in Kanpur from September 27.
There will be three T20 matches against Bangladesh in 7 days.
A BCCI source told PTI on the condition of anonymity, "Yes, Shubman will be rested for the T20 International series against Bangladesh. If you look at the list of matches, three T20 Internationals will be played on October 7 (Gwalior), October 10 (Delhi) and October 13 (Hyderabad). Now the first Test against New Zealand will start from October 16. So it is important to rest Gill because of the difference of just three days."
Gill was the captain of the team on the Zimbabwe tour.
Gill has played 21 T20 Internationals so far and has one century and three fifties to his name. He has scored runs at a strike rate of around 140. He was recently appointed captain for the five-match T20 International series against Zimbabwe in Harare which India won 4-1.
Test team players will get rest in T20.
In the current season, T20 Internationals are the least important for the Indian team while the World Test Championship points from the five-match Test series against Australia are at the top of its agenda. Also, the ODI format is also important for the team as the Champions Trophy will be played in this format in February-March. It is understood that most of the players included in the Test team are unlikely to play in the T20 International series against Bangladesh.
Pant gets to rest, and Ishaan may return.
The trio of Rohit, Virat, and Ravindra Jadeja have retired from the shortest format while fast bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj will also be rested as per the needs of workload management. It will be interesting to see whether Rishabh Pant plays T20 Internationals or not as his workload is of paramount importance to the selectors and he is needed in longer formats. If Pant is rested, Ishan Kishan's name can once again be considered after being out of international cricket for nine months this year.
