The patient suffering from this virus recovers soon. India is keeping an eye on the situation of all its neighboring countries including China.
HMPV was identified in 2001
BJP national president and health minister JP Nadda said health experts have clarified that this is not a new virus. He said, "It was first identified in 2001 and has been spreading across the world for many years."
How does HMPV spread and when does it spread more?
Elaborating on the virus, he said that HMPV "spreads through the air and can affect people of all age groups." He added, "This virus spreads more during the winter and early spring months."
How prepared is the government?
On recent reports of rising cases of HMPV, Nadda assured that the Health Ministry, ICMR and National Centre for Disease Control are "closely monitoring the situation in China as well as neighbouring countries." He added that WHO has taken cognizance of the situation and will soon share its report with us. Country data for respiratory viruses available with ICMR and Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme have also been reviewed and no surge has been observed in any of the common respiratory viral pathogens in India.
Why not worry about HMPV
Nadda further said that there is nothing to worry about it. He said that a joint monitoring group meeting was held on January 4 to review the situation under the chairmanship of the Director General of Health Services. The country's health system and surveillance network are alert, ensuring that the country is prepared to respond promptly to any emerging health challenges. There is nothing to worry about.
