The United States launched airstrikes against Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen on Saturday, in response to continued attacks on Red Sea shipping.

President Donald Trump issued a stern warning to the Houthis:
"Halt your campaign, or hell will rain down upon you."

He also cautioned Iran, the Houthis' main backer, stating that the US would hold Tehran fully accountable if it continued to support the group.

Civilian Casualties & Houthi Response

The Houthi-run health ministry in Sanaa, Yemen reported:
9 civilian deaths and 9 injuries due to the airstrikes.
The Houthis condemned the strikes as a "war crime" and vowed retaliation.

Why Did the US Strike?

Since November 2023, the Houthis have launched over 100 attacks on shipping vessels in the Red Sea, claiming it is in solidarity with Palestinians amid Israel’s war with Hamas in Gaza.
The attacks have disrupted global trade, forcing shipping companies to reroute around Africa, increasing costs and delays.

Saturday’s airstrikes mark the largest US military operation in the Middle East since Trump took office. US officials say this is just the beginning of a large-scale military campaign across Yemen.

US Military Strategy Shift Under Trump

The previous Biden administration took limited military actions to weaken the Houthis.
President Trump has now authorized a more aggressive approach, including:

  • Expanding airstrikes in Yemen
  • Increasing sanctions on Iran
  • Pressuring Iran into nuclear negotiations

Who Are the Houthis?

The Houthis (Ansar Allah) are a Shiite militant group based in Yemen, backed by Iran.
The United States has officially designated the Houthis as a terrorist organization.
The group has been targeting US and allied ships in the Red Sea.

Regional Tensions & Iran’s Role

Iran’s other regional allies are facing setbacks:
Hamas in Gaza & Hezbollah in Lebanon have suffered major losses due to Israeli military operations.
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, a key Iranian ally, was overthrown by rebels in December.

With rising tensions, the US and its allies are bracing for potential retaliation from Iran and its proxies in the region.
