Gambhir's Test coaching tenure started with a resounding victory. Ravichandran Ashwin was the star with his all-round performance, which earned him the Player of the Match award on his own home ground.

Bangladesh won the toss in Chennai and opted to bowl first as the conditions were favorable for fast bowling. India got off to a poor start with star batsmen like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma departing cheaply and Shubman Gill getting out for a duck. Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, two of India's most trusted all-rounders in red-ball cricket, minimized the damage with a 199-run partnership.

Bangladesh's poor batting

Thanks to Ashwin and Jadeja, the Indian team scored 376 runs. In response, the Bangladesh team was reduced to just 149 runs in the first innings. India decided to bat instead of following on and declared the second innings at 287 runs. Bangladesh was given a target of 511 runs to win in the fourth innings. While chasing this, they were able to score only 234 runs and lost by 280 runs.
