Deepika Padukone was appalled with comments made by the chairman of Larsen and Toubro about encouraging employees to work overtime during the week and even on the weekends.. Reasoning behind those comments was expressed by SN Subrahmanyan exclusively during one of the employee interaction where they were puzzled why they were rather forced to work on Saturday’s as well.

The actor, a vocal mental health challenger alongside the rest of her community, made remarks on his comments via her Instagram account. “Its shocking to see how individuals that are of such high standing are able to make such statements. #MentalHealthMatters," she remarked.

To which Subrahmanyan bluntly responded that as far as he is concerned those employees are to work round the clock in nine weeks, a figure that prompted him to regret that the subs would not work night and daytime shifts instead. A remark attributed to Subrahmanyan “If I could compel you to work on Sundays, then I would be in a situation, I mean over the moon because I work on Sundays as well’’ in the most undated video.

Subrahmanyan said that employees must work 90 hours a week

Large companies’ cultural expectations are stringently being dictated by videos over work-life balance 和 employees self-identity. To work after stretched hours and most importantly across global time zones.

How does working extra hours impact your psychological well-being?

Excessive working hours make you physically exhausted and at the same time, they do not leave your mental health unharmed. In particular, there are studies that show a direct connection between excessive hours in the office and stress, anxiety, and depression.

Psychologists say that people who remain in the office longer than they should tend to work and take fewer breaks, and this undermines the quality of their sleep. When quality sleep is in deficit, further depletion of the body sets in, which then is detrimental to performance output and work standards.

On the other hand, constantly staying longer in the workplace diminishes living standards without any doubt, while at the same time it generates difficult socio-psychological issues because there is too little time for contact with friends and family causing clashes; this is a big turn off for many and the possibility of depression increases. Other disadvantages include:

Chances of difficulty handling stress

In the opinion of mental health specialists, excessive working hours by employees increase the probability of experiencing a sense of distance from events, the feeling of cynical attitude towards people and the feeling of work as less beneficial, this is called burnout syndrome.

Decreased Hours of Productivity

The expert’s opinion published quite recently disagrees with the notion prevailing among the masses that working overtime allows an individual to save time on certain chores. More hours can be allowed for an employee to complete certain tasks but this is not to say more work is accomplished as it may cause stress which will in turn lead to decreased productivity and efficiency due to exhaustion and fatigue.

Diminished Job Contentment

The long hours of overtime making an employee queues up more instant stress which directly pours onto the job making it even more unlikable. The pay is hardly able to compensate for all the free time consumed from the weekends or the time where the employee is relaxed or free.

Decreased Socialization

It seems that overtime workers have few spirits to spare for socialization. Their friends often feel abandoned and frustrated which leads to increased stress and creates tension in the relationship.
