Maharashtra Politics: The leaders of the Mahavikas Aghadi in Maharashtra met Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday and demanded that the post of Deputy Speaker of the Assembly be given to one of the parties in the opposition alliance. The leaders told Fadnavis that the opposition will allow the Speaker to be elected unopposed but they want the ruling party to follow the protocol and give it the post of Deputy Speaker.
MVA leaders discussed alliance strategy
The Maha Vikas Aghadi comprises Shiv Sena-Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray (Uttar Pradesh), Congress, and Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party-Sharad Chandra Pawar. Shiv Sena (Uttar Pradesh) leader Bhaskar Jadhav led the delegation and later MVA leaders held a meeting to discuss the alliance's strategy in the Assembly.
Narvekar filed a nomination for the post of Assembly Speaker.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Rahul Narvekar on Sunday filed his nomination for the post of Maharashtra Assembly Speaker. Narvekar, who was the Speaker in the previous assembly, was accompanied by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and both Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar. BJP state unit chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule and senior BJP leader Chandrakant Patil were also present on the occasion. MLA Narvekar is set to be elected unopposed from the Colaba assembly seat as no other candidate has filed a nomination for the election to be held on Monday.
All MLAs took oath in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly
105 MLAs, including members of the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) in Maharashtra, took oath as MLAs in the newly constituted assembly on Sunday. The MLAs took oath on the second day of the special session. MLAs from opposition parties had boycotted the swearing-in ceremony on Saturday, the first day of the three-day special session of the assembly, alleging misuse of EVMs in the recently held state elections.
Some MLAs, including Congress leaders Nana Patole, Vijay Wadettiwar, and Amit Deshmukh, Nationalist Congress Party-Sharadchandra Pawar leader Jitendra Awha,d and Shiv Sena-Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray (UBT) leader Aditya Thackeray, took oath soon after the House proceedings began today. Earlier, 173 MLAs took oath on Saturday while nine absent MLAs will take oath on Monday. Several first-time MLAs took oath on Sunday and the ceremony was attended by their family members.
