World Cup 2026 Qualifying Match : Luiz Henrique's 89th-minute goal helped Brazil come back from an early deficit to beat Chile 2-1 in a World Cup 2026 qualifying match. With this win, Brazil has reached fourth place in South American qualifying after the ninth round of the round-robin competition. Earlier, Lionel Messi-led Argentina held Venezuela to a 1-1 draw in a match that started 30 minutes late due to wet ground at the Monumental Stadium in Maturin, Venezuela.
Argentina remains on top of the 10-team South American qualifiers with 19 points after nine matches. Despite losing 1-0 to Bolivia, Colombia has 16 points and is in second place. Uruguay is in third place with 15 points while Brazil has 13 points. Chile, which has performed poorly in South America so far, took the lead in the match played at the National Stadium in Santiago with the help of a goal from experienced striker Eduardo Vargas. For Brazil, striker Igor Jesus scored the equalizer with a header in the injury time of the first half.
In the match against Venezuela, defender Nicolas Otamendi scored for Argentina in the 13th minute. He put the ball into the empty net after Messi's cross and goalkeeper Rafael Romo's mistake. Salomon Rondon equalized for Venezuela by scoring a header in the 65th minute. Venezuela is the only team from South America that has not yet played in the World Cup.
